Although the economy is still reeling from the Great Recession in the United States and Europe, cloud hiring, at least for the majority of the public cloud market, is up. IDEAS recently analyzed cloud-hiring statistics from the job search website Indeed.com and compared them with similar statistics compiled in August 2011. Overall, the data spells promise for the cloud market, which has exhibited a substantial uptick in hiring over the past five months.
Although not included in the August 2011 study, the chart above also tracks job postings from IBM, which was still ramping up its public cloud option in August, and from HP, which just recently released a cloud offering in beta. However, note that for these companies, "cloud" was the only search string entered on Indeed.com. As such, the totals in the chart likely reflect some job postings that are not related to the public cloud solutions from these vendors. Surprisingly, even with the potential for extra postings, HP is barely ahead of Rackspace. IBM is behind both Rackspace and Amazon. However, IBM may be leaving the term "cloud" out of some of its job postings, especially in cases where a broader description is likely to attract more resumes. Moreover, specific cloud skills are not necessary to sell IBM's preferred, higher-profit-margin, private-cloud option.
By and large, the data indicates that cloud expertise is going to become an increasingly sought-after skill in the IT industry. IDEAS will continue to track this data in the future and release timely updates.
