EMC recently introduced the Celerra VG2 & VG8 NAS Gateway platforms which replace the previous generation EMC Celerra NS-G2 & NS-G8 Gateway products. EMC Celerra Gateway products function as dedicated network servers, connected via a back-end SAN to storage resources provided by CLARiiON and/or Symmetrix Arrays. This combination allows NAS and iSCSI IP storage to be centrally managed with multi-protocol file access.
Celerra VG8
Designed to consolidate storage from multiple applications and file servers the VG2 is offered as an entry-level alternative to the Celerra VG8 Gateway which provides a scalable storage solution with enterprise-level availability. The VG2 supports up to two X-Blades (or Data Movers) - while the enterprise-scale VG8 model supports up to eight.
The Celerra VG2 supports both single and dual X-Blade configurations. Each X-Blade consists of a Xeon processor, 6GB of RAM, 2 x FC ports for back-end disk connectivity, up to 2 x FC ports for tape connectivity, and 3 x UltraFlex slots allowing various I/O module configurations. There is also 1 x 10/100/1000 port for management use.
The Celerra VG8 supports from two to eight X-Blades. The X-Blades control the data movement from the disks to the network. Each X-Blade consists of a Xeon processor, 24GB of RAM, 2 x FC ports for storage connectivity, up to 2 x FC ports for tape connectivity, 4 x UltraFlex slots allowing various I/O module configurations. There is also 1 x 10/100/1000 port for management use.
Both the VG2 and VG8 include one or two Control Stations, which manage the Platform via GigE connection to each X-Blade. The Control Stations provide system administration and management, control X-Blade installation and configuration, failover and ongoing diagnostics.
Each X-Blade runs EMC’s DART operating system which provides a common management interface to the other Celerra products currently available. The DART File Server software functionality provides support for various protocols including SNMP, NDMP, ICMP and SNTP as well as standard NAS.
